Michigan News - April 11, 2009

With opening day quickly approaching I thought I’d take a break from March Madness today. Big news for the Tigers today as their starting rotation competition came to an end. It would seem Nate Robertson was the odd man out as Dontrelle Willis, Jeremy Bonderman and Robertson were competing for the final two spots in the Tiger’s rotation.

Robertson was traded to the Florida Marlins, the organization where he started his career, for left handed pitching prospect Jay Voss. I have to admin it’s a sad day for me as Nate did a lot for the Tigers. (My wife took the news hard as she made it very clear Nate was the “hottest” Tiger) Nate led the Tigers post season rotation during their World Series run in 2006. I still remember him getting out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the middle innings in game one of the ALCS at Oakland. Nate has guts and is a fierce competitor. That’s how I hope Tigers fans remember him. Fan’s will also remember his playful side in the dugout and “gum time” that Nate made popular.

The Tigers starting rotation is now set and looks like this:

1. Justin Verlander
2. Rick Porcello
3. Max Scherzer
4. Jeremy Bonderman
5. Dontrelle Willis

The Tigers will have many new faces in the lineup this season and time will tell if they made the right moves this off-season. One move I still question myself is not resigning Placido Palanco. In my opinion, Palanco was the glue in the Tigers lineup and infield. The decision was made not to resign him to make room for the up and coming infielder Scott Sizemore. I hope Tigers GM, Dave Dombrowski knows what he’s doing here…which he does most of the time.

Tiger fans will also get a look at youngster Austin Jackson (CF), Johnny Damon (OF), Max Scherzer (SP), Phil Coke (RP) and Jose Valverde (CP). I’m excited to see how the new look Tigers mesh and hopefully they can get over the hump this year and win the AL Central.
